SUNDORNE RECALLED by Geoff Hands

Exhibition Dates: 27 June to 8 August 2017

Geoff Hands began his development as an artist after studying at Shrewsbury School of Art
(1974-1976)

The exhibition begins with a watercolour painting made in Sundorne woods in 1977 (his last
Summer living in nearby Harlescott). Forty years later, the recollection of making the original
image is still strong and the artist’s various series of paintings that recall being immersed in a
woodland environment continue to be explored.

Combining landscape imagery with an interest in abstraction, Sundorne Recalled investigates
painterly and visual dialogues from past and present, and between the painter, the subject and
the medium of paint. Figurative, landscape imagery is developed by a gestural and abstract visual
language with an emphasis on colour and an evocation of atmosphere - but retains what David
Bomberg described as the ‘spirit in the mass’: thereby acknowledging a subjective response to the
landscape as well as the tactile qualities of paint in close assimilation to the visual.

In this series of paintings abstraction is embraced - but is grounded in real, lived experience. A
mnemonic tribute to the original woodland space, experienced at a specific time and place, is
intended to remain an essential ingredient in the making of the paintings. It may appear
contradictory, but the paintings are not intended to be anecdotal or to memorialise a past
experience, but are consciously made with a sense of the here and now.
